Tú is an informal form of address used with daily interaction with close friends, children, your peers, and acquaintances. Usted is a formal form of address and is used in formal situations or occurrences where the person is older than you, at a higher socio-economic status such as a judge, doctor, or professor, or if you are meeting someone for the first time. As a rule of thumb, you should use Usted especially when you are just starting to learn Spanish rapidly.
